What is a Delivery Order?
A Delivery Order (DO) is a warehouse instruction to update its ledger when a cask changes hands. It's an operational notice, not a legal title document.
DOs track physical custody; they do not establish legal title.
Why Delivery Orders Aren't Enough
- Not legal proof of title: Law recognises the contract of sale + paid invoice (and transfer docs), not the DO alone.
- Inconsistent issuance: Many warehouses won't issue DOs to private buyers; updates must flow via brokers.
- Ledger gap: If your name isn't on the warehouse ledger, you can't prove control.
- Broker friction: Records stall when brokers change, consolidate, or cease trading.
The Impact
- Hard to prove ownership: No warehouse-verified link to your cask.
- Delayed exits: Sales and transfers stall.
- Higher fraud risk: Duplicate sales/misrep exposure.
